Organized by the German Institut für Kulturaustausch, the exhibition explores the Surrealist idea and its impact from the 1920s to the present day. Artworks from the original Surrealist movement are presented in dialogue with works by subsequent generations. This exchange makes clear that Surrealism is not a closed historical phenomenon, but a continuing force that remains active today. It is an attitude, an unfinished and constantly evolving mode of thought. Seen across the decades, the themes and motifs of the Surrealist avant-garde appear more relevant than ever. Questions of identity, transformation, irrationality, and the interrogation of reality and perception continue to be negotiated in works informed by Surrealist approaches. Structured into four chapters, the exhibition demonstrates how Surrealist practices, across generations and up to the present, serve as a means of critical as well as humorous reflection on the present and the future. Featuring more than 100 paintings, works on paper, objects, photographs, and films, the exhibition reveals the compelling diversity of Surrealist art.
