Once you develop a preference for certain forms, the thing you are actually photographing becomes immaterial. You can photograph anything and everything imaginable – it’s always there. As Ernst Haas said of searching and finding in the first part of his four-part programme “The Art of Seeing”, broadcast in 1962 on Channel 13 NET (National Education Television): “And especially in our medium we work so much with the accident, but we recognize the accident. It is an almost paradoxical way: We recognize something we have never seen before, but it must be in us, so we see it.”
