Comment
The backwaters are the side or tributaries of a river landscape, as they are often found in alluvial landscapes. Which floodplain landscape was depicted here has not been handed down.
What is particularly interesting about this composition, however, is not the trees themselves, but their reflection in the water. These particularly picturesque forms and the contrast to the realistically depicted trees were probably in the interest of the pictorialist Sigismund Blumann.
