When I look for the reasons why I sought an approach through photography in Iran in particular, it is mainly the country's recurring presence in the media. There, the reports are almost without exception limited to the political situation. The focus is on Iran's relationship with its neighbors in the Middle East and its antagonism toward Western states.
In general, the reports on the country mainly feature politicians, mullas, and at least women in chadors, who comment on strategy and security policy, and they also repeatedly focus on the miilitary aspect. But are these images all that can be said (shown) of this country? After all, there are constant references to its historical and tourist attractions.
Because of these considerations and interests I was in Iran in 2003, 2006 and 2012 over a longer period and could then work on my picture material for weeks in each case.
