L'Inconnue de la Seine (The Unknown Woman of the Seine) was an unidentified young woman whose death mask could be found on walls of many artists'  homes after 1900. It was an inspiration for many writers and motif of many photographers. Legend has it that she was a victim of suicide. An employee at the Paris morgue was so taken with her beauty that he let mould a death mask of her face.
