A profile is perceived only through the shadow. What Herbert Bayer achieves by cutting out in form of a silhouette,  Ralph Gibson does  by placing a sharp shadow line exactly in the middle of the face . The background on the left with the chimneys corresponds through the light/dark contrast to the shadow play in the face.
