The picture shows a section of the Paris metro rail by Hector Guimard and was published in an article by Salvador Dali. In the same article Man Ray's photographs of Gaudí's architecture are shown.

During the night, Brassaï was able to concentrate on architectural details in a special photographic way: The contrasting light of the lanterns and the often unlit background, which therefore appears black on the picture. By highlighting a detail through cropping, a variety of interpretations were possible and thus these pictures often took on a surreal touch.
